Two UC Riverside Scientists Selected As Entomological Society Of America Fellows

Brian A. Federici and Alexander S. Raikhel, distinguished professors of entomology at the University of California, Riverside, have been selected as fellows of the Entomological Society of America (ESA). This year’s fellows bring the total number of UC Riverside faculty members who have received this distinction to 11 (three are deceased).

Air Pollution In Tunnels Concentrated By Up To 1000 Times

A toxic cocktail of ultrafine particles is lurking inside road tunnels in concentration levels so high they have the potential to harm drivers and passengers, a new study has found. The study, which has been published in Atmospheric Environment, measured ultrafine particle concentration levels outside a vehicle travelling through the M5 East tunnel in Sydney.

Making Summer In The City More Bearable

As temperatures soar, scientists have been collecting data amid the ancient ruins that symbolise the birthplace of western culture. These data, combined with measurements from aircraft and satellites, promise to improve ‘urban heat island’ forecasts to make life in modern-day Athens easier during heat waves. Heat waves strike with relative frequency in the summer months across southern Europe but the Greek capital of Athens is notorious for its sweltering conditions.

Antimicrobial Antibodies In Celiac Disease: Trick Or Treat?

Anti-microbial antibody formation has been reported in celiac disease. Relatively high positivity rates were observed for the conventional antibodies, for example, ASCA, anti-OmpW, and anti-I2, and they were known to decrease after a successful gluten free-diet. The importance of newly discovered inflammatory bowel disease-associated antibodies (including anti-glycan antibodies and anti-OMP) in celiac disease is not sure.

New Tech Cuts Industrial Odors, Pollutants

A North Carolina State University researcher has devised a new technology that really does not stink. In fact, it could be the key to eliminating foul odors and air pollutants emitted by industrial chicken rendering facilities and - ultimately - large-scale swine feedlots. Dr. Praveen Kolar, assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering at NC State, has developed an inexpensive treatment process that significantly mitigates odors from poultry rendering operations.

WFP Asks For $230M In Emergency Food Aid For Kenyans

Former International Footballer To Open Independent Living Scotland 2009

Former Glasgow Rangers and England footballer Mark Hateley will be officially opening Independent Living Scotland 2009 at the Glasgow SECC on September 9th at 10:00am. Mark Hateley now works as an official ambassador for Glasgow Rangers. In his career Mar played for Portsmouth, AC Milan, and Monaco before joining Glasgow Rangers where he scored 115 goals in 222 games. Mark also won 32 England caps during his successful career.
