FDA November 2008 Update On Feed Enforcement Activities To Limit The Spread Of BSE

To help prevent the establishment and amplification of Bovine Spongiform Encephalophathy (BSE) through feed in the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented a final rule that prohibits the use of most mammalian protein in feeds for ruminant animals. This rule, Title 21 Part 589.2000 of the Code of Federal Regulations, here called the Ruminant Feed Ban, became effective on August 4, 1997.

FIA To Engage An Extra One Million People With Its More Active 4 Life Campaign, UK

100-Meter Sprint World Record Could Go As Low As 9.48 Seconds

2008 was a great summer for sports' fans. World records tumbled at the Beijing Olympics. Usain Bolt shattered both the 100m and 200m world records, knocking tenths of a second off each. People have been getting faster and faster over the last few decades, which made marathon runner Mark Denny, from Stanford University, wonder whether last century's massive increase in population could account for these dramatic improvements.

A comparison of the coverage received by pharmaceutical and herbal remedy trials, reported in the open access journal BMC Medicine, has revealed that it is rarely possible for the lay public to assess the credibility of the described research.

Illinois State Public Health Director Announces Expansion Of Program To Combat Childhood Obesity

Dr. Damon T. Arnold, state public health director, today announced at 10 additional schools in Illinois will begin implementing the CATCH program - Coordinated Approach to Child Health. Today's announcement continues Governor Rod R. Blagojevich's efforts to address the obesity problem by changing children's and parents' attitudes and behaviors toward nutrition and physical activity. Da Vinci Award For Allergy Lab Test

Scientists who have developed a new technique that can test for up to 5,000 different allergens from just one drop of blood have scooped a prestigious national award which encourages innovation in healthcare technologies. The new basophil-microarray based allergy assay is the brainchild of researchers in The University of Nottingham's Schools of Pharmacy and Biosciences, in collaboration with colleagues in the Centre for Respiratory Research at Nottingham City Hospital.

Fear Of Hypoglycemia A Barrier To Exercise For Type 1 Diabetics

According to a new study, published in the November issue of Diabetes Care, a majority of diabetics avoid physical activity because they worry about exercise-induced hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and severe consequences including loss of consciousness. Despite the well-known benefits of exercise, this new study builds on previous investigations that found more than 60 percent of adult diabetics aren't physically active.
