Avian Influenza Detected In Saskatchewan Statement From The Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister Of Agriculture And Agri Food, Canada

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has moved quickly and decisively to quarantine a farm in Saskatchewan and has confirmed the presence of avian influenza (AI). The Agency has a great deal of expertise and experience in handling situations like this and I have every confidence in their ability to take the necessary measures to appropriately resolve this situation as expeditiously as possible.

Asthma And Allergies Linked In New National Study

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have found that more than 50 percent of the current asthma cases in the country can be attributed to allergies, with approximately 30 percent of those cases attributed to cat allergy."It has long been debated whether people who develop asthma have a genetic propensity to develop allergies, or atopy," said Darryl C. Zeldin, M.D., a senior investigator at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

CODEX Paving The Way For Safety Assessment Of Products With GM Low Level Presence

European industry representatives welcome the decision taken by the Codex ad hoc Task Force on Foods Derived from Biotechnology to advance a proposal addressing the risk assessment of low-level presence of biotech plant materials, found in food or feed, which have been authorised in one or more countries but not yet in the importing country. The decision follows negotiations by members of the Codex ad hoc Task Force meeting this week in Chiba, Japan.

UK Government Declares Bluetongue Outbreak

After five animals were confirmed to be infected with the Bluetongue virus the UK government has declared an outbreak. This is the first time bluetongue has appeared in the United Kingdom. An official from Defra (Department for the Environment, Foods and Rural Affairs) said the disease is now circulating among the local animal and midge population. The five confirmed infected animals were in Suffolk, eastern England. Authorities say that the animals have been culled.

American Red Cross Joins International Response To Flooding In Africa

The American Red Cross is supporting three relief workers who are joining the international response to flooding in Africa. Extremely heavy rains and flooding have affected more than 1.5 million people in at least 18 countries, driving thousands from their homes, destroying crops and displacing livestock.
