Fast And Cost Effective Test For Safer Water

A simpler technique for testing public drinking water samples for the presence of the radioactive element radium can dramatically reduce the amount of time required to conduct the sampling required by federal regulations. IT Employed To Allocate Stormwater Runoff, Leading To Cleaner Waters

Streams, lakes, and bays may soon be cleaner thanks to an innovative approach to managing stormwater runoff being developed at Virginia Tech and funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).A novel software application will help engineers and planners select the most efficient and site specific methods -- called "Best Management Practices" (BMPs) -- of controlling the amount of pollutants that enter the receiving waters through stormwater runoff.

APHA Receives W.K. Kellogg Grant To Strengthen Role Of Public Health In Agriculture Policy

The American Public Health Association (APHA) recently received a $98,266 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to educate and engage public health and environmental health organizations around critical farm and food policies. From June 1 through Dec. 31, the grant will allow APHA to increase the public and environmental health communities' roles in understanding, developing and supporting farm and food policies.

Updated NIH Guidelines Offer Valuable Information On Asthma Diagnosis And Management

Phadia US Inc. announced that The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) has issued an update on selected topics in the Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. Information in the guidelines reported that allergies have emerged as one of the most important factors in the development, persistence and potential severity of asthma and that allergy testing is necessary to educate patients about allergen avoidance and symptom control.

Soccer International, Antonio Puerta, Died After Suffering A Heart Attack

Antonio Puerta, 22, who played football for Sevilla and Spain, has died after having a heart attack during Sevilla's match against Getafe. During the first half of the match he collapsed as he was running back towards his goal - medics were seen preventing him from swallowing his tongue, but he did manage to walk off the pitch. It was not long before he collapsed again in the changing rooms and had to receive cardiac resuscitation before being rushed to the Virgen del Rocio hospital.

Culmination Of 22 Years Of Research: Natural Insecticide Recreated In The Lab

Twenty-two years of dedicated research has finally resulted in success: In the journal Angewandte Chemie, a British team headed by Steven V. Ley at the University of Cambridge reports the first synthesis of azadirachtin, a natural compound that stops predatory insects from feeding.Plants have a variety of defense mechanisms to deter insect attack. Investigation of these mechanisms often allows researchers to discover molecules with interesting biological properties.
