May Is The Month For Asthma Awareness

May is just around the corner, and that means asthma is once again taking its place on the national and international stage. The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) will be celebrating Allergy and Asthma Month here in the U.S., and World Asthma Day is coming up May 1. As we have for several years now, the AARC will be providing free asthma screenings on Capitol Hill during Asthma Awareness Day, which this year is scheduled for May 2.

Psoriatic Arthritis Symptoms And Causes

If you have psoriasis, you need to be aware that some people do go on to develop a form of arthritis associated with this skin disease. One out of three patients with the skin disease will develop the joint disease. This arthritis is called psoriatic arthritis. It usually develops between the ages of 30 to 50 but can even start in childhood. Men and women are equally at risk.

Study Finds Role Of Mid-Brain In Integrating Heart & Respiratory Response To Exercise

For almost one hundred years the brain's "central command" system - whose charge includes controlling the body's cardiorespiratory response to exercise - has been pursued. Animal experiments and functional imaging studies have provided clues to the location of this system, but the underlying electrophysiological activity has never been measured.

FDA Approves Once-daily Veramyst™ (fluticasone Furoate) Nasal Spray For Treatment Of Seasonal And Year-round Allergy Symptoms

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved once-daily Veramyst™ (fluticasone furoate) Nasal Spray to treat seasonal and year-round allergy symptoms in adults and children two years of age and older. Veramyst will be available by prescription nationwide by late May 2007.In clinical trials, Veramyst relieved overall nasal symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergies, which included nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy nose and runny nose.

Herbal Medicine Used For Chinese Stroke Patients Lacks Strong Evidence

The herbal medicine Dan Shen, a standard treatment for ischemic stroke in China, lacks strong scientific evidence to support such use, according a new review of studies. Nevertheless, based on the available data, Dan Shen treatment showed a tendency to improve short-term neurological deficits in stroke patients, say researchers at Sichuan University in Chengdu, China.

The National Asthma Council Australia has released an updated version of the popular 'Managing Your Asthma' wall chart, which is designed to help health professionals discuss asthma medications with patients. The new wall chart features up-to-date colour photographs of 43 different asthma medications available in Australia today. Each product is shown next to its current packaging for at-a-glance recognition and is grouped according to its classification.

Eosinophilic Oesophagitis

Eosinophilic oesophagitis results in an inflamed oesophagus, the muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Around 8 in 10 cases are seen in people with allergic conditions such as hay fever and asthma. The frequency of eosinophilic oesophagitis appears to be increasing. The reasons are unclear, but it is known that allergies of all types have become more common then they were a generation or two ago.
