Some Evidence Shows Chinese Herbal Medicine Helps Angina Patients

An herbal medicine used to treat cardiovascular diseases in China may improve symptoms of chest pain when used in conjunction with traditional treatments, according to a new systematic review.In several studies included in the review, taking tongxinluo improved angina patients' electrocardiogram results. Overall, though, the review did not provide solid evidence that the medicine routinely benefits cardiac patients with angina.

Smoking: Exercise, Stress And Second Hand Smoke

Exercise May Help Smokers QuitAccording to Austrian researchers, exercise-training therapy is an effective smoking cessation aid without side effects. The new study examined whether exercise-based interventions combined with a smoking cessation program are more effective than a cessation program alone. Sixty-eight smokers participated and were randomly given either nicotine replacement therapy or nicotine replacement therapy with exercise training for three months.

Turmeric Prevents Experimental Rheumatoid Arthritis, Bone Loss

Turmeric, a spice long used in traditional Asian medicine, may hold promise for the prevention of both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, according to a recently completed study at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. This work paves the way for the preclinical and clinical trials needed before turmeric supplements can be recommended for medicinal use in preventing or suppressing rheumatoid arthritis.

New Study Indicates Moderate Exercise May Protect Against Colds

A moderate exercise program may reduce the incidence of colds. A study published in the November issue of The American Journal of Medicine, led by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, found that otherwise sedentary women who engaged in moderate exercise had fewer colds over a one year period than a control group.

HHS Secretary Announces Development Of Physical Activity Guidelines At National Prevention Summit, USA

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today announced that the Department will develop comprehensive guidelines, drawn from science, to help Americans fit physical activity into their lives. The announcement was made during his keynote address on the state of the nation's health, during the Innovation in Prevention Awards Ceremony at the National Prevention Summit, an annual HHS-supported event that highlights successful initiatives in disease prevention and health promotion.

EU Commission Drops Disease Compensation Threat For Farmers

The NFU (National Farmers' Union, UK) has fought off EU Commission proposals that would have cost British farmers millions of pounds in compensation for animal disease outbreaks.Intense lobbying by the NFU and Defra on a proposed new EU Regulation governing so-called "state aids" to farmers has resulted in three potentially hugely damaging proposals being scrapped.
