Gene Therapy Completely Suppresses Ovarian Cancer Growth In Animal Model

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine researchers have used gene therapy to either completely abolish or significantly inhibit tumor progression in a mouse model of ovarian cancer. The researchers, therefore, believe gene therapy may significantly improve the prognosis for ovarian cancer patients.

Abertay Team Devises Chemical-free Disinfectant System

One famous disinfectant's claim to kill 99.9% of germs stone-dead has entered advertising folklore, but a team from the University of Abertay Dundee has gone literally a thousand times better. Abertay researchers have devised a method of killing bacteria in water using microbubbles and ozone that has succeeded in destroying 99.9999% of E.coli bacteria in a given volume of water. Obesity Continues To Grow In The United States

Despite efforts at federal and state levels to combat America's growing obesity problem, over the past twelve months obesity has continued to rise in 31 states, according to a report, called 'F as in Fat, 2006', from the Trust for America's Health. The trust suggests US authorities continue to fail to provide effective solutions.Mississippi tops the obesity league of US states - 29.5% of its adults are obese. Not All Yellow Jackets Created Equal

Flouting widely held beliefs that yellow jacket stings have less effect early in the season and that most people can outgrow a dangerous allergic reaction to a sting, allergists at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine have concluded that the sting severity is determined not by the calendar but by the species of insect doing the stinging. Allergies Linked To Parkinson’s Disease

Researchers from Mayo Clinic have discovered that allergic rhinitis is associated with the development of Parkinson's disease later in life. Findings will be published in the Aug. 8 issue of the journal Neurology. "The association with Parkinson's disease is increased to almost three times that of someone who does not have allergic rhinitis," says James Bower, M.D., Mayo Clinic neurologist and lead study investigator.
